HIDDEN STORIES

Woolworth Building

That green-topped tower downtown? That’s the Woolworth Building, once the tallest in the world (1913–1930). Nicknamed the “Cathedral of Commerce,” it was built with cash, literally. F.W. Woolworth paid $13.5 million in CASH to build it.

Fun fact: The lobby is so ornate; it’s been compared to a European cathedral and is now only accessible by guided tour!
