Chrysler Building

Looking north through Midtown’s skyline, the Chrysler Building stands out with its gleaming spire. Completed in 1930, it was briefly the tallest building in the world before the Empire State Building took the crown. Architect William Van Alen crafted its stainless-steel crown and eagle gargoyles to reflect the spirit of the machine age. Walter Chrysler personally funded the project so his children could inherit it.

Fun Fact: The building’s spire was secretly assembled inside the tower and hoisted into place to outdo a rival skyscraper, an unexpected twist in the race for height.
